Question by Ted Rell: When and how did the British royal family lose it's political power and might?
There was a time that a king in England cold levy taxes, wage war, and command executions without trial.
Today, Queen Elizabeth only seems to have ceremonial power. Was Queen Victoria the last British sovereign with true power? When- and how did the royals lose their power ?

Was it with the dissolution of much of the British Empire after WW2?
Thanks

When they unlearned that it's = it is, not the possessive pronoun.

No...they have been losing their political power since the signing of the Magna Carta, so....about the 13th century. 1215.

Question by Peter O: What is the limit of British Royal power?
In the U.S. we sturdy the British Government in many venues: civics, geography and social studies. There is quite a bit of overlap in these courses; one would have to be a dullard to miss the fine points. We are taught that the British Monarch is a figurehead, with little or no power, living at the sufferance of people and parliament. I have heard the phrase "living flags," as a discription of their function. Even the Queen's website says: "The British Sovereign no longer has a political or executive role." And yet this same website, which I take to be an official document of The Queen in Parliament, states: "The Sovereign is Head of the Armed Forces and only he or she can declare war and peace." I can only understand this royal admission to be a representation of a plenipotentiary power, and not that of a dillitante or mere figurehead. If you can explain this contradiction, I would be greatful.
Peter

The Queen has no real power, only ceremonial power. Parliament could vote to abolish the monarchy tomorrow if they wished.

Question by Hector: Royal House of Stewart?
First let me say i love the Queen and the royal family. And since the Queen is a descendant of King James.Who himself is a direct descendant of King David.I believe in the monarchy. But since William has disgraced the royal line by marrying the commoner daughter of a former air hostess.I must say.Is it not time to seriously now consider bringing back the more direct line of King James to the throne.Which of course would make Franz Duke of Bavaria King ,or even maybe His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury. The Duke is a descendant of The Duke of Monmouth the illegitimate son of Charles ll.Yes i know the whole catholic, protestant thing. And let me say i am not a catholic. But let us not forget that George l was chosen after skipping some 30 members of the Stuart line.We would just exchange one German family for another one.One that is MUCH closer to King James. This Middleton person is completely unacceptable to give birth to a possible future Sovereign.Imagine the disgrace of having a Sovereign with a Middleton family tree.

Best answer:

Answer by Lili
Sorry, but the illegitimacy of Monmouth knocks the Duke out of the running. And by the way, Monmouth's mother, Lucy Walter, had an unfortunate reputation.

And since Catherine Middleton's ancestry, like that of many Brits, can be traced back to royalty, I don't see the problem.

Incidentally, how do you think many of these titled families got their start? They didn't just spring up out of the ground, bearing their titles and with blue blood running in their veins, by divine decree. Centuries ago, they were nobodies, because the fortunes of families have risen and fallen over the years. The family of Diana Spencer were untitled farmers. And it is quite possible for a manual laborer today to be a descendant of a titled family with even some royal blood in the upper branches of his family tree.

Question by Mizz G: Which Royal House reigned over England before the House of Windsor?
If the House of Windsor was just established in 1917, it's a pretty recent Royal House then.

I've heard of the former Royal House called "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" from which King George (the current Queen Elizabeth's father) originated, but to the best of my knowledge these were German duchies in Bavaria, and a German speaking House.

Was there a latter Kingdom of England of some sort within the United Kingdom before the House of Windsor? After all, the United Kingdom was formed sometime in the 1700's, right, right after the dissolution of the former Kingdom of England? If so, what was the reigning royal house called, and who were its prominent monarchs? Why and how did it get replaced with the House of Windsor?

Also, how about the other countries in the UK? Did a unified Royal House obliterate the other distinct national monarchs within Great Britain and (Northern) Ireland, or do they still exist? If they do, or did coexist with the modern United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island at some point, how come they're not mentioned as much in the international world?

And if the countries that constitute the UK all have such strong national identities, why did they unite to form one sovereign state? I understand that the House of Windsor reigns all over the UK... but does the Royal Family consider themselves to be English at all, or do they always refer to themselves as the broader term "British"? Also, what's the background on the switch from the Anglo-Saxon German speaking "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" to the English-speaking British House of Windsor?

Best answer:

Answer by Lili
The first German speaking House was that of Hanover, directly descended from King James I Stuart, whose House had replaced that of the Tudors (from whom he himself was directly descended). The Stuart monarchs were James I, Charles I, Charles II, James II (who was booted out in the Glorious Revolution of 1688), William and Mary (she was a Stuart; he was her husband, the Prince of Orange in the Netherlands and half a Stuart via his mother), and Anne.

Anne died with no surviving children. The British, anxious to avoid a Catholic monarch, the reason that James II and his son had been booted out, decided that the succession should go to the Protestant descendants of Sophia of Hanover, a granddaughter of James I via his daughter. Her son George was the King of Hanover, and he became George I of Great Britain and Ireland. The House of Hanover was a branch of the House of Welf.

When Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. it was determined that his family name was Wettin, but he was called Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, so this was the House name used until George V changed it to Windsor; they didn't bother with Wettin.

Question by hello world: Have you seen the latest Royal Proclamation from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II?
A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN! ALL RISE ...

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up “revocation” in the Oxford English Dictionary.) Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

2. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or consulting with a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

3. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler, although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

4. You will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. Also, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrification will help you understand the British sense of humour.

5. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitters will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. Australian beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brand beers will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that it can be sold without risk of further confusion.

6. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly /US gallon. Get used to it.

7. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

8. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the Australians first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

9. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

10. The letter “U” will be reinstated in words such as colour, favour, labour and neighbour. Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (Look up “vocabulary'”. )

11. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ”like” and “you know” is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter “u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'

12. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French Fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4
p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

Question by louise1885: Purchasing a 2009 and 2011 Sovereign Coin from the Royal Mint. Any advice/suggestions please?
My grandfather is interested in carrying on a family tradition of purchasing a gold sovereign coin for a new baby we're expecting in July but is having a lot of trouble tracking one down. I'm keen to help him find one but have had no luck with the Royal Mint and as I am no coin expert, I am afraid to purchase one from websites such as Ebay incase I am sent a counterfeit coin. Also the coins currently for sale on Ebay seem to be selling for £400+ and I don't want to part with a large amount of money on my grandfather's behalf unless the coin is genuine. Does anyone know of any better routes I could pursue? Or would anyone be able to advise me on what warning signs I could look out for when buying coins online so as to avoid any counterfeit coins? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Best answer:

Answer by Alice E
Go to your local coin shop. I'm not sure what gold is at right now, but believe it is over 00.00 an ounce. I would not buy anything through ebay unless I was an expert.

This person on yahoo answers is an expert. I would email him/her.
