Is It True That When Edward VIII Abdicated, the Line of Succession Ceased?

to exist?
I remember reading somewhere that when Edward VIII abdicated, Parliament had to intervene because when a King abdicates, the line of succession ends therefore in effect ending the dynasty and the Monarchy.
I'm not explaining it well, but apparently the heir of the sovereign was not George VI because there was no sovereign to succeed because he had abdicated and not died. In other words, when a monarch abdicates in the UK, the heir cannot succeed a non-existant sovereign except on death where it is consiered that the monarch does not die, In this case, nobody died.
Apparently, Parliament had to select an heir and decided to continue with George VI but had designs on one of his other brothers who was considered more suitable at the time
Is this true?
