Question by Querious: Collecting Gold Coins: what's the value of the following?
Mint condition, uncirculated Swiss gold 20 Franc, French Gold 20 Franc, German Gold 10 marks, British Gold Sovereign and a Russian Gold 5 Ruble. All were supposedly made pre-WWI.

The total amount of gold is just under an ounce. I know that gold is worth 0/oz + . . . . .

In order to answer your question I would also need to know the years of the coins. With the years the coins could be looked up at www.numismaster.com

For the moment, all I can really do is give you these links for current gold spot prices:

http://www.coincommunity.com/spot_prices/

http://www.nwtmintbullion.com/

http://www.apmex.com/

http://www.kitco.com/market/

I'll try to keep an eye out for when you add details to this question but I could easily overlook it. If you want me to come back and give you more information. Send me an email and I'll for sure come back to look.

Question by Kabir P: Gold and Silver Coins?
I have a one 1 oz gold coin and a few 1 oz silver coins. These are sovereigns. Bought them about a year ago. If I sell them on ebay in India, do I need to pay VAT or capital gains tax on the purchase? What other taxes might apply? What if I don't declare this?

Best answer:

Answer by b2fnow
I think you are asking if the sale will be reported to a taxing agency? The simple answer is, no.

Do you need to pay VAT? That's up to you. "Need" is a relative term.

What if you get caught? What are the laws in your country? Probably a fine.

Question by IROK: Foreign and old coins?
I collect foreign and some old coins. Some of them come from random friends and people, so some of them i'm finding hard placing the origin of. If you know the origin country of any of the following 4 coins, please tell

- i have one coin, relatively large, round, year 1922, says one florin. has a picture of coats of arms, including three lions in a column, making me thinks it's a British thing. on the back, has profile of a man, and around the edge reads : " GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT. OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP: " the IND makes me think the coin may have been used in India as part of the British Empire?

- the second coin is also quite large, round says 50 FORINT on the front and in smaller writing B.P on the bottom. the reverse side has a picture of an eagle on a tree stump and reads around the edge: " MAGYAR KOSTARSASAG " year 1997. i also have the same in 1 and 2 Forint.

- the third coin puzzles me. it's quite small, round, 50 senti, reads around the edge: " EESTI VABARIK " year 1992, the back has a picture of the three lions as in the first coin (i do not believe the two are related) the lions on both coins however are identical to those used on the new design of coins in England.

- for the last example, i'll use two coins. they are of same origin, one is 2 Fr. the second smaller, 20, but does not state the currency. have vines/plants round the edge of the face, years 1978 for the larger coin, 2008 for the second. The Fr made me think Francs, but i have Francs and they dont look like that. plus, they would no longer be used in 2008. the back of the larger one shows a woman with a spear and a coat of arms with a cross on it, the cross is the Red Cross or Switzerland flag kind, not the Christian kind. has stars around the edge around the woman. underneath her it reads Helvetia
the smaller coin has a woman's face (presumably the same woman as on the larger 2 Fr. coin) and reads " CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA" around the edge.

please dont reply telling me to google it or giving vague links to a site but not specific.

i'd greatly appreciate your help on any of the coins.

1.The first one is easy: it's an English florin. The florin was worth two shillings (old money, of course). Yours has the name of George V, who was King of England in 1922

2. Don't know so much about the second, but "Magyar" means it's Hungarian.

3. Estonia

4. Switzerland (the Swiss have their own Franc, so you were right, Fr is short for Franc. Just not the French ones.)

Hope this helps. Sorry I don't really know a lot about coins, but this may give you some leads for further research.

Question by death lake: Perth Mint Australia - Buying Gold Coins?
Hello,

I had a look at the perth mint website & I found the following gold coin:

22 carats, 7.9881 grams/0.2354 oz, 91.67% purity & 25$ denomination

The price of this gold coin is 649AUD

Is the price of the coin reasonable according to current gold price? As I read in the internet that 1 gram of gold = 39AUD so the mentioned price is twice as it suppose to be so did I miss something?\

Thanx

PS. The coin is a sovereign

Answer by liberty911
Let's define some terms:
Current value of 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) of gold should be about AUS$ 1220.80;
therefore; 1 gram of pure gold is currently worth about AUS$ 39.25.
22 carats (91.67% purity), 7.9881 grams total weight (0.2354 troy oz bullion).
Gold bullion value of the coin you describe is AUS$ 287.40.
According to your question, the coin is priced at more than twice bullion value.
I hope that helps.

Question by Danny J: What are the sizes of these coins?
Someone I know has an 1887 British Sovereign coin, but they do not know if it is a £2 coin or a £5 coin. Please can someone tell me the sizes of both of these coins?
I will give best answer to person that gives me good measurements.

Best answer:

Answer by mrcoins.australia
the sizes of the 1887 gold coins are approx 21.7 mm and 7.98 grams for the Sovereign, 29.5mm and 15.97 grams for the 2 pound coin, and 36mm and 39.94 grams for the 5 pound coin.

Interestingly the Proofs for the 2 & 5 pound coins were minted in Sydney Australia and have a small "s" on the ground underneath the horses hoof. but beware of contemporary forgeries.

Might I suggest that you place an ad in your local paper offering to buy gold scrap jewelry and coins. You can buy it at 65-70% of spot and do quite well for yourself.
