Question by Eric S: Are Canadians happy USA never conquered BC 150 years ago?
The USA when Canadian land was under British rule wanted all the territory from the 49th parallel up to the Russian land now known as "Alaska". This was before the Gold Rush.

The USA NEVER succeeded in this mission to connect the lower 48 with the purchase of Alaska. After Canada became a Confederation, there were controversies of Americans harassing some Canadians to populate the boundaries with American demographic to expand territory.

The USA tried things like establishing permanent leases in British Columbia and the BC govt rejected the deals every time.

The US couldn't even get a highway connecting Alaska to lower 48 until World War II, and it was only then with US money.

The fact to this day there is no land connection between Alaska and Parallel 49 is testimony that Canada has soverign power and due to treaties or whatever terms you want to look at, it is a factor that successfully disabled the USA's territorial expansion.

Doesn't this prove Canada strong?

It's great that Canada got 500 miles of Pacific Coast and British Columbia.

What you probably don't know is the British claimed Oregon Territory down to the Columbia River - and following the Columbia to the 49th Parallel.
That would have been great (:

Really what it meant (since there was no Canada proper at the time) that the British weren't prepared to fight over British Columbia, and President Polk wasn't serious when he said "54' 40" or fight" - compromise ruled the day.

What do you think? Answer below!

150 years ago, Alaska was Russia. Alaska did not become a state till about 50 years ago. Aren’t we happy that our neighbours purchased Alaska putting a barrier between us and Russia. What happened 150 years ago has nothing to do with what our strength is now. Had the US not purchased Alaska, we would probably be totally different now. If Canada was ruled by Britain 150 years ago, that makes us pretty weak. When we look at Canada now, we have no nuclear weapons, we have no missiles, our submarines (3 in number) are British relicks from the second world war. To answer your question, you made the point that we are weak, and are more reliant on the US now than we were 150 years ago. We could not even build a road to our own Yukon, we had to rely on the US and their money to build the highway.
